Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture（CHSLA）promotes the competency assessment for engineers working in landscape architecture
To elevate the professionalism of landscape architecture engineering teams, facilitate international mutual recognition of qualifications, and enhance the global influence of Chinese engineering expertise, the Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture (CHSLA) has implemented a competency assessment program for engineers since 2023. This initiative represents a cornerstone of CHSLA’s strategy to cultivate world-class talent in the field.
On-site and virtual interviews
Administered under the guidance of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), the assessment draws standards from global bodies such as the International Engineering Alliance (IEA) and the Engineering Council of the United Kingdom (EC-UK). CHSLA has published foundational documents including the Competency Assessment Specification for Foreign Engineers in Landscape Architecture (T/CHSLA 10008—2023) and Implementation Rules for Engineering Competency Assessment (Trial). The voluntary process combines peer-reviewed portfolio evaluations and structured interviews to assess five key competencies:
- Engineering knowledge and technical proficiency
- Professional ethics and sustainability practices
- Team collaboration and cross-cultural communication
- Lifelong learning and innovation mindset
- Leadership and project management excellence
Successful candidates earn the designation of CHSLA CSE Engineers and receive tiered certifications:
- Apprentice Engineer (AE)
- Professional Engineer (PE)
- Senior Professional Engineer (SPE)

Applicants who have passed the assessment become "CSE Engineers of the Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture" and receive registration and certification. Registered CSE Engineers need to engage in continuous professional development, completing a certain number of professional practices and capacity learning activities each year.

The style of the CSE Engineers Certificate
As of January 2025, 134 professionals have achieved certification. CHSLA plans to expand global partnerships for reciprocal mutual recognition of engineering competency, aiming to create a unified framework for international engineering mobility.
